What Is the General Approach to Healing Used by Chiropractors?

When people think of chiropractic care, they often envision quick spinal adjustments aimed at easing back or neck pain. While this is a familiar part of the profession, the general approach to healing used by chiropractors is far broader, focusing on the body’s structural integrity, nervous system function, and natural ability to heal.

The Foundational Principle: The Body Heals Itself
At the heart of chiropractic philosophy is the understanding that the body is a self-healing, self-regulating organism. The brain, spinal cord, and nervous system orchestrate this process, constantly communicating messages between the brain and every organ, tissue, and cell in the body. When the spine is misaligned or not functioning properly, this communication system can become disrupted, resulting in a host of health issues. These misalignments, or dysfunctional spinal joints are sometimes referred to as "Subluxations" by chiropractors.
Chiropractors address these disruptions through precise spinal adjustments, which restore motion and alignment to the spine, helping the nervous system function optimally. This allows the body to return to a state of balance, repair itself, and maintain health naturally. Chiropractic is a drug free profession, and while chiropractors may recommend nutritional supplements, they do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery.
Two Complementary Approaches: Traditional Chiropractic and CBP®
In my practice at Northeast Chiropractic in Providence, I use both traditional chiropractic care and a specialized, research-driven approach called Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®).
Traditional chiropractic care focuses on detecting and correcting joint restrictions and spinal misalignments using manual adjustments. These adjustments are often done by hand, but sometimes also use an adjusting instrument, or a specialized adjusting table. These adjustments often provide immediate relief for pain and stiffness, promote mobility, and reduce nerve interference.
CBP® takes this a step further by integrating spinal rehabilitation and structural correction. Based on physics, mathematics, and peer-reviewed research, CBP® aims to restore the spine to its ideal alignment. Using precise digital X-rays and posture analysis, we create individualized care plans that include specific adjustments, mirror-image exercises, and spinal traction techniques designed to reshape the spine over time. The result is not just relief, but often long-term improvement in spinal health, posture, and overall well-being.
Beyond Pain Relief: A Whole-Body Approach
Modern chiropractic is not just about treating back pain—it’s about improving the function of the entire body. Many patients report improvements in headaches, sleep, energy, digestion, and even mood, as chiropractic care helps remove stress from the nervous system.
Additionally, chiropractors often incorporate lifestyle recommendations—such as ergonomic advice, exercises, nutrition, and stress management—to support the body's natural healing process and prevent future problems.
Chiropractors approach healing by working with the body's innate intelligence. Through spinal adjustments, structural correction, and holistic lifestyle guidance, chiropractic care offers a proactive path to health that emphasizes restoring normal function and allowing the body to heal from within.
For those looking to go beyond symptom relief and address the root cause of their health challenges, chiropractic care—especially methods like CBP®—offers a science-based, patient-centered approach that delivers both short-term relief and long-term wellness.
